MFL
What is the intent of our MFL curriculum?
Learning a foreign language is part of the primary National Curriculum and is a statutory requirement for all children in Key Stage 2 (KS2). Wentworth Primary School has adopted a whole school approach to the teaching of French to all pupils from Years 2-6.
Our intent is to develop the confidence and competence of each child in French. Our goal is for them to be passionate, curious and confident about their own foreign language learning abilities when they finish the primary school phase of their education, preparing them for language learning at secondary school,
We will help them develop and demonstrate substantial progress in the 5 key language skills necessary for learning French: speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar.
How do we implement our MFL curriculum?
Teachers plan their lessons using the Language Angels scheme of work. Each class has a timetabled lesson of at least thirty minutes per week. French can also be revisited in short sessions throughout the week to consolidate knowledge and ensure new language is retained.
Each lesson will focus on a combination of the 5 key language learning skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar).
What is the impact of our MFL curriculum?
All Pupils:
Pupils will learn basic vocabulary in French and will be able to read, write and speak simple phrases by the end of Key Stage 2.
DP/LAC:
Pupils will learn about other countries and cultures and feel confident in speaking, reading and writing in an additional language.
SEND:
Adaptations will be made to French lessons to ensure pupils with SEND are able to participate in language learning with their peers.
